You know why my birthday is special for me? Not just a day where I get older but because of the anniversary of yesterday. It has been officially 9 years since I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. With the up and downs I've had in those 9 years still feel fresh to me. Yet I try to celebrate my birthday as big as I can (if I can) because within being diagnosed, going to doctors, being hospitalized a few times, and having my first surgery to remove part of my small intestine that was the size of a grapefruit and looked like a bomb fixing to go off. Dr. McEver, my doctor, told me that if I had not had that surgery to remove it... I would have died of internal bleeding and massive hemorrhaging because of that grapefruit-size intestine. Just a few weeks after my 21 birthday... So ya, my birthday is not just a birthday. It is a celebration of my life still going. That I escaped death not once but twice because I fought. Sometimes it doesn't feel like these 9 years have helped me but that is me having blue days (like today). So... Ya. Happy Birthday to me.
